Today's gospel    Mark 10:17-30

As he [Jesus] was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ’ He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth.’ Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ They were greatly astounded and said to one another,‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible.’

Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we have left everything and followed you.’ Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.

O God, you called your servant Columba
from among the princes of this land 
to be a herald and evangelist of your kingdom: 
Grant that your Church, remembering his faith and courage, 
may so proclaim the splendour of your grace 
that people everywhere will come to know your Son 
as their Saviour, and serve him as their King; 
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, 
one God, now and for ever.

Notices and notes

Thank you to Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival, and to the Alex Leach Band and members for the uplifting 'Gospel Hour' Service, on 7 June in Holy Trinity Westport. 
Sincere thanks for the very generous donations made by attendees towards the church repair fund. Cash donations came to an incredible 1,745.88 euros.

Most important, is that there was a spirit of joy and genuine worship, 
and of quiet thankfulness for God's faithfulness to us, God's friendship towards us and God's forgiveness of us (human beings), with all our foolishness and foibles. 
All this because of the Lord's lovingkindness and 'masterplan' of redemption - Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, the giving of the Holy Spirit (in a new way), and his promise to return to make right all that is wrong in the world - and in us!

Westport Children’s Choir in HTW


Westport Children’s Choir End-of-Year Concert, Friday 12 June, 7.30pm in HTW. Come along, enjoy the music, and encourage Eriko and the children 
at the close of a special year which included the choir performing in the Carnegie Hall, New York.

Sun 14 June, Confirmation Service, 3pm in HTW, 
for all the parishes of the Aughaval Group. 
Bishop Michael Burrows will confirm and preside at the Holy Communion. 

Please note that there will be services as usual in Turlough Church (7pm Sat) and Castlebar (10am Sun) on this weekend, for those who do not wish to attend the Confirmation service, but there will be no service in Dugort, Achill.

Our final Confirmation preparation session is on Sat 6 June at 10am in the Rectory, Westport.

Scoil Acla Summer Recital - 
change of venue


Scoil Acla Annual Recital Concert: evening of Wed 29 July.
This year the recital will not be in St Thomas's as after much consideration, and in light of growth in the event's popularity over recent years, the organisers have decided that a venue is required which can better accommodate a sizeable number of people and their needs, including car parking and access needs.
We wish Scoil Acla every ongoing success
and thank them for many years of happy association.

Bringing faith to life through Muddy Church 


‘Muddy Church’, ‘Messy Church’ and 'Forest Church' are fun yet serious all-age faith-building innovations, tried-and-tested in other parishes and places over many years.  With the help of our Youth and Children's Ministry team, we plan to introduce variations and aspects of these expressions in the parishes, as occasional and supplemental to traditional services in these summer months, for the benefit especially of our children and young families. 


Please continue to pray for our young people, and, 'Watch this (outdoor) space!'

Thank you to Cór Mhaigh Eo and Coro de Cómpeta (Spain) and to all who supported the Voices of Iberia & Eire concert on 18 April. The cushion rentals on the day raised €206.40 towards Holy Trinity repair funds, and the concert raised an impressive €400. Castlebar* 
Sundays Weekly at 10am: 
- Holy Communion on 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.
- Morning Prayer on 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, followed by tea/coffee.
Open church every Friday from 11am - 1pm.

Dugort, Achill 
April - September inclusive:
- Services weekly at 3pm. Evening Prayer/ Holy Communion

October - March inclusive:
- 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 3pm. Evening Prayer/ Holy Communion

Services are followed by tea/coffee occasionally.

Giving towards the upkeep and restoration of the churches

The work and upkeep of the churches requires ongoing funding to meet costs. Each of our Church of Ireland parishes has charity (CRA) status - their own or that of the Diocese (of Tuam, Limerick & Killaloe) - please see note below. 

One-time donations

Regular giving 
Regular giving can be by means of the weekly envelope system (-information on request), or by standing order.

Return to Inishbiggle, Sat 15 February 2025

  It was especially joyful for a few of us from mainland Mayo to step foot again on Inishbiggle on 15th February, having been prevented by the weather from sailing on our last attempt at the end of November 2024. While on this occasion it was lashing in Limerick, wet in Westport, and raining cats and dogs in Castlebar, the sun was splitting the clouds gloriously on the approach to beautiful Biggle. Also uplifting was to arrive at the church and on entering to find it looking, if not transfigured, transformed - for example, with its newly-stripped and repolished pews, clean floors, doors, harmonica and walls, and a close-to-spotless vestry into the bargain. Hats off and enormous thanks to the church wardens for the hours of painstaking work - truly a labour of love for this precious and important place of gathering and worship, emanating from a sincere love for God and his people, of all faiths and persuasions. In memoriam: Linda Bourke
