Today's gospel, 28 May: "When the Spirit comes..."

Image
Driven by the Spirit,  Christ in the Wilderness by Stanley Spencer https://www.wikiart.org/en/stanley-spencer/christ-in-the-wilderness-driven-by-the-spirit The gospel reading      John 16:12-15 ‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. Scared Space "The first disciples were essentially simple, uneducated men. That they found it hard to take in what Jesus was saying to them was an understatement. Even today we still find it difficult, and it has taken centuries of study and brilliant minds to help us grow in our understanding of Jesus' words.... We give ...

Today's gospel and prayer resources  In today's gospel Jesus continues to prepare the disciples for his departure and absence and the coming of the Holy Spirit to them and to the world in a new way.    A prayer from the Church's Ministry of Healing The gospel       John 16:5-15 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?” But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate  will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about  sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. ‘I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. ‘I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. Today's gospel: Fruit that lasts

Image
The fruit of the Spirit Credit: Thy Kingdom Come, Church of England John 15:12-17 ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants  any longer, because the servant  does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. Today's gospel: Love and Joy

Image
John 15:9-11 [Jesus said] As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.  Image: The Church's Ministry of Healing   What are the commandments Jesus desires us to keep? The answer is first and foremost the commandment to love - love God and love one another. How do we know what love is? Love is always inclined towards sacrifice and giving - sacrificial giving. Today's gospel, Tues 20 May: Peace

Image
Westport House   Today's gospel      John 14:27-31 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. You heard me say to you, “I am going away, and I am coming to you.” If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me; but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way. Peaceable Kingdom  by John August Swanson (1938-2021) Christian Art " In today’s Gospel reading Christ speaks of a very different kind of peace, a peace that transcends anything this world can offer. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. A peace the world cannot give, this ...
