Luke 17:7-10

[Jesus said] “Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’? Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’? Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded? So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’”

Comment

There is perhaps an intended irony in Jesus' words in this gospel, as he does indeed say to us, his servants, ‘Come.... and take your place at the table’, the table of the Lord's Supper or Holy Communion/ the Eucharist.

The point of this gospel is not that we are worthless - for God's love shows that we are of great worth to God - but that all that we have, and are, comes from God. This is expressed in the blessing of the collection or offering during services, in words such as these, based on 1 Chronicles 29:11:

"Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. For all things come from you, and of your own we give you."

Christ makes us, his servants, friends. He says to us and all his followers:

"I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father."  (John 15:15)
