Today’s gospel, 30 July: Where is my treasure?

Today's gospel contains two concise parables which together remind us, among other things, of the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:21, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Matthew 13:44–46

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

We could add to these reflections that it is possible to discover the "field" or "treasure" (of the gospel and the kingdom of God), to treasure the field or the treasure (of faith and intimate relationship with God) for many years, and to grow weary, apathetic or disillusioned about the effort required in caring for and making best use of the field or treasure, and in time even to abandon the treasure (of our faith life) substituting it for lesser treasures.

A Prayer

Lord, grant that I may not grow weary in well-doing but may hold fast to that which is good and remain committed to the gospel and in love with you. In the name of Christ. Amen.

Please note that during August there will be no Wednesday gatherings, in person  or online.
