A Prayer for Jamaica and the Caribbean, by Christian Aid

God of mercy and compassion,
we lift before you the people of Jamaica and all in the Caribbean
whose lives have been torn apart by Hurricane Melissa.
Be with those who mourn, those who are missing loved ones,
and those who face the loss of homes, livelihoods, and hope.
Grant strength to all who bring relief and comfort —
neighbours, aid workers, and communities standing together in love.
May your peace surround those in fear,
your light guide those in darkness,
and your justice move us to rebuild with courage and compassion.
In the name of Christ, our shelter and our strength,
Amen.

Today's gospel    Luke 13:31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him [Jesus], ‘Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.’ He said to them, ‘Go and tell that fox for me, “Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed away from Jerusalem.” Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.”

God's Grandeur

Poem by Gerald Manley Hopkins

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
    It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
    It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
    And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
    And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
    There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
    Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
    World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.
