Today's gospel    Luke 14:1-6

On one occasion when Jesus was going to the house of a leader of the Pharisees to eat a meal on the sabbath, they were watching him closely.

Just then, in front of him, there was a man who had dropsy. And Jesus asked the lawyers and Pharisees, ‘Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?’ But they were silent. So Jesus took him and healed him, and sent him away. Then he said to them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?’ And they could not reply to this.

Collect of the Day

Blessed Lord,
who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning:
Help us to hear them, to read, mark, learn and inwardly digest them,
that, through patience, and the comfort of your holy word,
we may embrace and for ever hold fast
the blessed hope of everlasting life,
which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.

A Prayer for Jamaica and the Caribbean, by Christian Aid

God of mercy and compassion,
we lift before you the people of Jamaica and all in the Caribbean
whose lives have been torn apart by Hurricane Melissa.
Be with those who mourn, those who are missing loved ones,
and those who face the loss of homes, livelihoods, and hope.
Grant strength to all who bring relief and comfort —
neighbours, aid workers, and communities standing together in love.
May your peace surround those in fear,
your light guide those in darkness,
and your justice move us to rebuild with courage and compassion.
In the name of Christ, our shelter and our strength,
Amen.
