Today's gospel reading    Luke 11:42-46

‘But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practised, without neglecting the others. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love to have the seat of honour in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the market-places. Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without realising it.’

One of the lawyers answered him, ‘Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us too.’ And he said, ‘Woe also to you lawyers! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not lift a finger to ease them.

Background

Jesus did a fair amount of his teaching over meals. In this gospel Jesus has been invited to dine with one of the religious leaders and is at table with them (hence his earlier drawing on analogies of tableware and here herbs to make his point) when he pronounces this "woe", condemning those - especially leaders - who have all the right appearances on the outside but make life and faith observance difficult for others.

This week's Collect

Almighty God,

you have made us for yourself,

and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in you:

Teach us to offer ourselves to your service,

 that here we may have your peace,

and in the world to come may see you face to face;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.                                        Attributed to Saint Augustine
