The gospel reading Luke 13:22-30
Jesus went through one town and village after another, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem.
Someone asked him, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He said to them,
“Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able. When once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then in reply he will say to you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!’ There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out. Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God. Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
Comment on the gospel reading
This is a hard and challenging gospel reading. Contained within the words attributed to Jesus is a warning against complacency. It warns the reader against missing out on knowing God and having a part in God's kingdom.
Simultaneously there is a positive emphasis on the breadth of the Lord's invitation to enter and share in God's peaceable kingdom, and on its openness and inclusiveness: "People will come from east and west, from north and south...".
Today's gospel, then, encourages us to take to heart the invitation to "Taste and see that the Lord is good" (Psalm 34:8) and to open our hearts to God, so that by the end of our life on earth we will have begun to know the Lord, rather than be strangers to God.
It also contains a reminder that the Lord knows our hearts, thoughts and actions. There is an onus on each of us to desist from doing, thinking or saying anything that is even remotely evil.
"This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your descendants may live." (Deuteronomy 30:19)
The gospel reminds us, then, to instead choose to be followers of Christ and to choose goodness, love and mercy, that is, to choose life and to be life-giving people!
Christian Art
Today's Christian Art reflection contains some hard history but good for us to understand. We, people from all backgrounds and traditions, are all in need of God's grace and forgiveness for our histories, both collective and personal.
