Today’s gospel: St Stephen’s Day. When light springs from despair
The Feast of Saint Stephen, 26 December

Today’s gospel Matthew 10:17-22
[Jesus said] Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
Saint Stephen
Stephen's Day coming hot on the heels of Christmas, and the story of his faith and his persecution and death by stoning, act as a blunt reminder that for people of many faiths, the reality of persecution is never far away. Perhaps Stephen was an easy target, serving as he did in a very public and visible role in the nascent church at Jerusalem, that of deacon and administrator of the distribution of food aid to widows in the faith community.
Yet it was directly following Stephen's death that the Saul, a chief instigator of persecution of the new Christians and who supervised Stephen's stoning, came to be confronted by the Risen Jesus - in the famous 'Road to Damascus' experience (see Acts chapter 9) - leading to Saul's conversion. Saul's transformation, from hater of Jesus and of Christians, to Paul the great advocate of Christianity and missionary of the church, is symbolised to a degree by his name change to Paul.

A prayer for those alone this Christmas
Loving God,
whatever happens,
be with me this Christmas,
especially when I find myself alone.
Be with those whom I hold in my heart,
whether they are near or far away.
Help us all to hear the good news of the angels,
and to reflect on the light that shines in the darkness.
May the world you came to heal
know your peace this day,
for the sake of Jesus Christ. Amen.
