Today's gospel, Mon 5 Jan 2026: Come and see!

Please note that this week's and next week's Midweek Holy Communion services will be in St Mary's Church Westport, 7th and 14th January, at 10.30am.

Please also note that services in Westport on Sundays 11th and 18th January will also be in St Mary's at 12 noon. These arrangements are on account of repair works in Holy Trinity Westport. Our gratitude is extended once again to our friends in St Mary's Church and to Fr John Kenny for the kind hospitality and accommodation.

Today's gospel   John 1: 43-51

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him,

‘Follow me.’

Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philip found Nathanael and said to him,

‘We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.’

Nathanael said to him,

‘Can anything good come out of Nazareth?’

Philip said to him,

‘Come and see.’

When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him,

‘Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!’

Nathanael asked him,

‘Where did you come to know me?’

Jesus answered,

‘I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.’

Nathanael replied,

‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!’

Jesus answered,

‘Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.’

And he said to him,

‘Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.’

Comment

Sometimes in the church and in our personal lives we can look at our situations, circumstances, restrictions and limitations, and like Nathaniel feel, 'Can any good thing come out of this?' Often, however, the God surprises us, just as Nathaniel was utterly surprised by Jesus and his knowledge of him.

Knowing our 'beloved-ness' by God, and when we act with integrity, we can trust God with our circumstances,

A prayer

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11, NIV)

Lord, help me to trust you today and for the year ahead.

In the name of Christ, Amen.
