Our first 'Havens for Nature' meeting, on the Havens for Nature publication and managing our churchyards and graveyards for biodiversity, took place on 28 July, in Christ Church, Castlebar. A positive and practical result of the evening is that a Biodiversity Team is being formed for the Aughaval Group of Parishes. If you are interested in being part of this team please contact Brid Mcauley or Susie Fry (numbers on request) or Revd Suzanne.

An online talk by the Heritage Council on Havens for Nature will be held on 17 August at 7.30pm. Information as follows, from Biodiversity Ireland: 

"Webinar: Supporting Biodiversity in Faith Grounds, 17 Aug, 7:30pm - 8:45pm. The Heritage Council is hosting an online talk for faith groups or individuals interested in taking action for biodiversity on their faith grounds. 
Earlier this year, the Heritage Council published a booklet, Havens for Nature: Supporting Biodiversity in Faith Grounds. This guide supports faith communities to take simple actions for biodiversity on their grounds. Read the guide at www.heritagecouncil.ie/publications.

This online event will bring together a range of expert speakers to explain why action is so important, how to get started, and the biodiversity measures that can make a real difference. Speakers include: Meadhbh Bolger, Biodiversity Officer, The Heritage Council; Kate Chandler, the National Biodiversity Data Centre; Jennie Drysdale, Chairperson of Doonbeg Tidy Towns / Doonbeg Church Return to Nature; Jane Mellett, Trócaire and Laudato Si’ Working Group; Reverend David White, Rector, Zion Church of Ireland Parish; Satwinder Singh, EcoSikh Ireland Chairperson; and Paul McNamee, Sunyata Buddhist Centre.

Return to Inishbiggle, Sat 15 February 2025

  It was especially joyful for a few of us from mainland Mayo to step foot again on Inishbiggle on 15th February, having been prevented by the weather from sailing on our last attempt at the end of November 2024. While on this occasion it was lashing in Limerick, wet in Westport, and raining cats and dogs in Castlebar, the sun was splitting the clouds gloriously on the approach to beautiful Biggle. Also uplifting was to arrive at the church and on entering to find it looking, if not transfigured, transformed - for example, with its newly-stripped and repolished pews, clean floors, doors, harmonica and walls, and a close-to-spotless vestry into the bargain. Hats off and enormous thanks to the church wardens for the hours of painstaking work - truly a labour of love for this precious and important place of gathering and worship, emanating from a sincere love for God and his people, of all faiths and persuasions. In memoriam: Linda Bourke
