Holy Trinity, Inishbiggle
Holy Trinity Church, located on Inishbiggle Island, Co. Mayo, stands as a significant and eye-catching landmark with a rich history. Constructed in the late 19th century, the church was funded by a generous bequest from Ellen Blair of Sandymount, Dublin, on her death in 1887. The architectural design, attributed to John Skipton Gervais of Athlone, features a compact rectilinear plan, a slender profile of openings underpinning a “medieval” Gothic theme, and an attractive bellcote. In 2003, Holy Trinity Church became a significant symbol of ecumenical harmony when in a special service it was rededicated to serve both the Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic communities on a permanent and ongoing basis. This initiative marked a significant step in fostering unity between the two communities and traditions on the island. Today, Holy Trinity Inishbiggle continues to act as a testament to the island’s Christian heritage and to the resilient and collaborative spirit of its inhabitants.
