Today's Gospel Matthew 7:7-12
‘Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
‘In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.
Comment
Today's gospel can be compared to Luke 11:11-13, in which Jesus says, "Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”.
The Scorpion
You can read an interesting interpretation of this painting here:
https://scotland.op.org/stanley-spencers-christ-in-the-wilderness-the-scorpion/
It suggests that behind the poignancy of the painting and the sadness in Christ's face is the knowledge that the Father has given the Son a "scorpion" - death on the Cross that lies ahead.
The scorpion In the painting may have stung him already, as the fingers of Jesus' left hand appear swollen. Nevertheless, Jesus holds the stinging creature with tenderness and attentiveness.
Led by the Spirit, St Paul will later write words for us who benefit from Christ's death and resurrection which take "the sting" out of our human failings, and out of evil, mortality and death:
“Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
